Barbecue

Lexington North Carolina is the mecca of BBQ in the Carolina's and Lexington Barbecue is one of the best. The fact that the parking lot is filled on a Monday night is a testament to the Barbecue served here.

I found this place by accident and I am glad I did. Dixie Bones serves some of the best BBQ I have ever had anywhere. The owner Nelson H. Head is originally from Birmingham, Alabama. Dixie Bones started out in the Capital Hill section of Washington DC but lost its lease and moved to this location in Woodridge, Virginia off of I-95. If you are within a 100 miles of this place it is worth the effort to come here and eat.

The sauce they use at both Dixie Bones and Lexington Barbecue is vinegar based which enhances the taste of the meat rather than masking it.

Frank Pepe Pizzeria in New Haven Connecticut

This pizzeria located near the Yale campus has been serving great pizza since 1925. I have had pizza all over the country and this place is in the top 3.

The building is not much to look at but you can see the long line out front that the pizza being served inside is what people come for. I had to wait in line over an hour to get a table.

There are no tables at Frank Pepe only booths. The Neapolitan pizza is cooked in a coal fired oven. The pizza is a thin crust topped with the ingredients of one's choice. The suprising thing is the prices which were cheaper than most of the pizza places of note in Birmingham such as Davenports, Rocky's, and Daves.

Wellfleet Massachusetts

This the Wellfleet City Hall. The town itself dates back to 1620.

This is one of the local markets in town where you can buy fish fresh off the boat and produce that for the most part is locally grown.

This is the main street that runs through Wellfleet

This Winslow's Tavern which serves very good food. The Wellfleet oysters I had here were very good considering they were harvested that day.

This is the dock area of Wellfleet. Notice in the background the cottages that line the shore.

Cape Cod Massachusetts

This is the view of the beach and ocean at Nauset Lighthouse

A Cape Cod cottage on Cape Cod Island in Sandwich

A typical Cape Cod cottage.

The beach at Nauset Lighthouse. You have to walk down about 20-30 feet of stairs to reach the beach from the top of the sand dune.

The Nauset Lighthouse

Scituate Rhode Island

I stopped here this morning for breakfast. I have found on my trip that nearly every town in New England has a diner like this where the locals go to eat, drink coffee, and catch up with the latest news. The town dates back to 1731.

New Harbor Maine

This is the deck outside Shaw's where they get their lobsters. A large number of lobster's come through here and are shipped all over the world.

This is the inside of Shaw's

This is the outside of Shaw's Fish and Lobster. It is not much to look at but the food and views are great. The movie "A Message in a Bottle" used Shaw's in several shots.

Bar Harbor Maine

Bar Harbor is a very touristy town. While other places in Maine are dependent on tourism Bar Harbor seems to have gone overboard. Most of the shops are nothing more than t-shirt and ice cream shops.

Camden Maine

This is the City Hall in Camden Maine.

This the harbor in Camden. They have lots of shops and restaurants that surround this area and on Main Street. Very neat town.

Red's Eats

Red's Eats is a roadside booth located in Wiscasset, Maine next to the bridge on US 1. Red's attracts large crowds with lines stretching around the building toward the bridge

This is a photo of the lobster roll that Red's is famous. Each roll contains lobster meat from at least one lobster. Red's lobster rolls are different from most in that you get nothing but lobster meat on a roll. A trip to Maine without a stop at Red's would be wrong.

Bath Maine

This is the city hall of Bath Maine. Bath is an old ship building town. Many of the ships from World War II were built in Bath.

The weather vane on tp of the Bath City Hall is pretty cool. It pays homage to Bath's shipping heritage.

Freeport Maine

They have no locks on the doors at L.L. Bean. There is no need because L.L. Bean never closes it is open 365 days a year.

This is the lobster I had at Harraseeket Lunch and Lobster. You can't get a lobster any fresher, cheaper, or better.

This is the docks in Freeport next to the Harraseeket Lunch & Lobster

This place knows how to fix a lobster and any other seafood you fancy.

York Maine

This is the lighthouse in York Maine

The houses in York sit right on the street across from what they call a beach in Maine

This is not like the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. It is more rock than sand. People lay out on the rocks to sun.

Concord New Hampshire

This is the capital of New Hampshire. It has a gold dome like the one in Vermont.

When I saw this church I said this looks like an Episcopal Church and when I saw the the sign my intuition was correct. It is St. Pauls.

Concord has a population of about 40,000 which is small for a capital city.

Hanover New Hampshire

These are two buildings on the campus of Dartmouth College. They both face a large quad similar to the University of Alabama quad minus Denny Chimes

Westbury Vermont

Westbury is home to "Ben & Jerry's" Ice Cream. The tour was quick, they would not let you take photo's and other than some free ice cream it really was not worth the time or effort.

Montpelier Vermont

This the capital building in Vermont. The building is wide open in that no security check and not a single security guard in site.

This is the Senate Chamber. This room is still used by the Vermont Senate.

This is the center hall of the Vermont capital

This is the view from the front steps of the Vermont capital.

Montpelier is a neat town. The population is less than 20,000 making it the smallest populated state capital in the United States. There are lots of restaurants and shops located throughout the downtown area.

Bennington Vermont

This is one of the dorms at Bennington College. The buildings on campus are very modern. The school has one of the top writing programs in the country

This is the stone house that served as Robert Frost's home in the 1920's. Frost is buried in the cemetery in Bennington.

This the view from the porch at the Mt. Anthony Country Club. Great food and a million dollar view.

Manchester Vermont

This is first Congregational Church in Manchester.

This is the Bennington County Courthouse in Manchester.
This is the Equinox Hotel in Manchester. It has been in operation since 1789. There are several shops across the street that are part of the hotel.

Manchester is a very neat town. They have shops that line Main Street that sell just about everything. The town also has outlets that line the side streets. The homes here are much larger than in other parts of Vermont.

Benningon Vermont

This is the corner of Main Street in Bennington where US 7 and Vermont 9 meet. There are various shops and restaurants located in this area. Bennington is a very laid back town. People seem to keep to themselves and let life roll.
This is the small motel I am staying called the Kirkside Motor Lodge. It is not the Ritz-Carlton or the Four Seasons but it is well maintained and it is within walking distance to downtown.
This is the Bennington Battle Monument. While it is not the Washington Monument it is still pretty impressive.

The food in Bennington is very good for a town of less than 13,000. There are several small pubs around town that serve food. Last night I ate at a restaurant called Allegro's. They had an appetizer of stuffed risotto which was risotto stuffed with mozzarella cheese and marinara sauce. The entree I had was Shrimp and Asparagus which was sauteed shrimp and asparagus in white wine cream sauce of bacon and garlic over linguini.

I had breakfast this morning at a place called "Full Bellies". The name is very appropriate you will leave with a full belly. They serve great omelette's and coffee.
